Comrades

So collectivization plus the onset of the great depression is not a great combination.

I wanted the right style of farm architecture, the right model of Fordson tractor, and even the right cut for a “decommissioned” White Army field cap. But during my research-slash-procrastination, I found myself reaching that magical point that many artists know–close enough.

Also, this comic might take the record for number of layers–43. Snow just doesn’t look right unless you layer it in.

6 throughts on "Comrades"

  1. This is a really neat piece. Especially the 43 layers of snow!

Wait a minute … a White Army field cap? On Malutki? Are we suggesting something interesting in his backstory here? Nice!

  2. Ah, Malutki — a bandit with a heart of gold, that one. The owlet could be one of Bzik’s relatives.

I was going to comment that the old Ford would be gray and not red, but rust, yeah?

    1. Yes…totally rusted out already, insinuating that these peasants are ill-equipped to assimilate the new technology and directives of the Party.

  3. The contrast in the owlet’s eyes — especially the look of sheer joy in the panel where he is holding the apple — is amazing. You do such evocative work. Man, sometimes I wish I had been an artist instead of a writer….

  4. This scene reminds me so much of a Red Skelton Christmas Special. One of the ones where he plays Freddie the Freeloader. Those scenes always brought tears to my eyes.
