Upping the Ante

This is a moment that I guess the whole comic has sort of been building toward… it is called “Rudek and the Bear” after all :)

Wanted to try a “white on white” kind of background. You know, the artistic challenge of making a snowy landscape where the sky and the ground are both white. The result is this is the most purple I’ve ever used ever in a comic, hehe. I tried fiddling with the Hue/Saturation of the background, but kept coming back to this, since a shade of blue felt too… i don’t know, cartoony or stereotypical. that lavender color just seemed more true to a snowy evening. So I tried to balance it a little by making their makeshift card table a complementary shade of yellow.

Also I managed to follow the 180-degree rule somehow.

7 throughts on "Upping the Ante"

        1. I remember (decades back) reading that a common Russian joke was “There is no news in Pravda, and there is no truth in Tass.” The punchline, of course, would be “Enjoy your Siberian gulag, comrade…”

  1. The purple works pretty well. I’m not sure I’d call their improvised table yellow, but the baby barf does complement the lilac negative space.

180-degree rule: new concept. I’ll become a film director yet!
