Wigilia

Looks like 1929 is coming to a close in the world of Rudek and the Bear. For the curious, the object Rudek is handing to Malutki is called an opłatek. Did you notice the new word bubble typeface? I was growing dissatisfied with the previous one, and built this one from scratch in Illustrator. I’m…Read more

Extra Credit

What I wonder here is, does Kasia know what she’s doing here? As she never interacted directly with “Private Misza,” she probably doesn’t know about Masha’s conflicted position… I wanted to really push the Vermeer-ish feel in the school room. So, I spent a good amount of time shading here. When I shade, I’m actually…Read more

Reconnaissance

Babcia certainly means well, but–she may just be selling Rudek up the river. It’s unlike her to not be a step ahead. though. For this comic I did a little research on Belarusian folk motifs. And it turns out there’s a whole vocabulary of symbolic designs. Fascinating stuff! The design Babcia’s working on incorporates protective…Read more

A Real Puzzle

Kasia is doing what any reasonable person would do, after hearing her shipment of supplies was confiscated at the border. The captain of the local KOP company, however, isn’t exactly a reasonable person. Like the last comic, this one was expedited by the wonderful Sabrina, who did the color flats. This allowed me to experiment…Read more

The Would-Be Fink

Yep. Sergeant Kowak is still trying to make the whole politics thing work. Currying favor, turning your superiors against your rivals. It ain’t so easy when the new Private is trying to make friends and bring the company together for some harmless fun. So…I took a big step with this comic, and my hope is…Read more

A Grave Matter

Continuing the plot from this comic. I was very amused when several fans left comments on that comic, speculating as to what Babcia was really up to… The question is, did Rudek allow himself to be misled? What did he think they were going to find? I rewrote the script on this one probably ten…Read more

Shady Characters

This comic follows up this red squirrel’s unfortunate encounter with Masha. That bear is supposed to be a sun bear. Though you can’t see his characteristic throat marking, I’m pretty happy with how his character design is differentiated from Malutki’s. Finally, I spent a good amount of time trying to evoke the warm glow of…Read more

Birthplace

Well, this one took a tremendously long time to complete, and I’m not completely satisfied with it. But it’s time to post and move on. Once I completed the backgrounds, which were quite light (due to the snowy landscape), I realized the whole look of the comic would be washed out and wouldn’t read well….Read more

Sneakthief

Masha’s recent run-in with a starving Belarusian refugee left her conflicted…but now it looks like she’s made a decision. Well, she tried to, anyway. For the backgrounds, I tried something new–the oil paint tool in MangaStudio. I was afraid of this tool for a long time. It just didn’t seem like something I could finesse…Read more

Clever Enough

And so! After a long pause, another installment of the story. I was pleasantly surprised to find that after months away from the drawing tablet, the style of this cartoon is pretty consistent with the last few. You may notice, though, that I’ve slightly modified the character design of Kowak.
